Edmonton - The Loyal Edmonton Regiment Band
A brass and reed band has been an integral part of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment (LER). The LER Band is one of the two Primary Army Reserve bands in 41 Canadian Brigade Group and services the Central and Northern Alberta area. The Band appears primarily as a concert and parade band which provides music for military, veterans and state functions as well as public performances throughout the year.
The Band went to France with the Regiment during the First World War; it is believed they were the first Allied Service Band to arrive in Europe, and is famed for leading the unit into battle at Sanctuary Hill. The Band remained active between the wars, playing for charity and entertaining and lifting spirits during the difficult Depression years.
During the Second World War, the Band performed at many concerts, public and private functions in the United Kingdom, promoting the good name of the Regiment overseas. The Loyal Edmonton Regiment fought in Sicily and in Northwestern Europe. The Regiment is particularly well-known for the Battle of Ortona fought at the end of December 1943 in Italy.
The Band rehearses at the J.C. Jefferson Armoury Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 1900 - 2200 hrs (7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.). The Jefferson Armoury is located at 11630 – 109 Street, across Princess Elizabeth Avenue from Kingsway Garden Mall and is between NAIT and the City Centre Airport.
